"Bear the Brunt" is the second piece of work in a series of sculptures depicting the strained relationships between humans and nature. The bear symbolizes strength, courage, protection and is considered to be at the top of the food chain with no natural predators. This bear, however, is buckling under the pressures of human development which includes deforestation, loss of habitat and pollution. While we see the bear as a powerful creature, there is little it can do to stand up against the insatiable machine of human progress and the resulting environmental degradation. The little human figure holding on the bear's leg symbolizes the feelings some of us have of helplessness and also of love.
