As far as I know, Flickr uses JPEG which is a format without alpha channel. Here the underlying format is WEBP which has such channel in addition to compress the images generally more at the same visual quality.
Thanks, Jack. I use the gray background so that the image seems transparent on Flickr. I tried using a transparent background (PNG file) and it didn't work.
Your photo (especially the gray background) inspired me a test. Since Stereopix supports WEBP image format, that it is allowed for upload, and that the transparency can be encoded in it, I tried to create a masked stereo photograph with a transparent background... and it worked nicely! I note in my todo list that I should remove the black background in the thumbnail list page to get advantage of this unintended feature.
