Gabares

These boats are named "gabares" (french term) and were photographed after the sun set in La Chapelle-sur-Loire, France. This kind of small boats were used on the Loire river to transport goods, because the flat-bottomed barge was ideal to navigate between the changing sandbars that form at some places in this still wild river. Nowadays, the transportation of goods is not done by the river anymore, and those boats were built by a local association that tries to maintain the memory of this heritage. In the distance, the three vapor columns are caused by the cooling of a nuclear power plant.
